4 Tips to Crush Your Tryouts
Building or maintaining confidence in athletics is challenging at all levels of play. Athletes often neglect mentally preparing for their sport during the preseason. Just as you train physically, you must also train your mind to reap the benefits. Do you want to maximize your success for the upcoming season?
As a former collegiate athlete, coach, and mom of two young athletes, I understand the importance of mindful preparation for preseason training. The demands on your body, learning new routines, and working with coaches and teammates all impact your performance!
Tip 1: Determine what you can control- Spending energy worrying about factors you can’t control, won’t help your success at tryouts. Channel your energy into your controllables by listing them out. Work to let go of anything that doesn’t make your list!
Tip 2: Deep breathing- start simple. Try a technique called box breathing. Breathing exercises help stimulate our parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for relaxation. More effective if you practice these when in a calm state. That way when you experience tryout jitters, your body will be more responsive when you take a few deep breaths to calm your nerves.
Tip 3: Visualization- practice visualizing success but also how you will navigate mistakes. Coaches aren’t looking for perfection, they want players on their team who demonstrate they have what it takes to bounce back from mistakes and get back to the next play.
Tip 4: Develop a pre-tryout routine- spend time experimenting with different warm up and stretching sequences, deep breathing exercises, playing your favorite pump up music. Try these at your training sessions, when the stakes are low. Experiment and find the best routine that makes you feel the most prepared and confident!
